OFH doubles distribution with help from Walmart, Feeding America

December 18, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— A pilot program between Feeding American, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, and Walmart has helped Springfield’s local food bank to almost double its food distribution.

Ozarks Food Harvest set an organizational record when it distributed a little more than five million pounds of food between July 2007 and June 2008.

Since then, The Food Bank is working at a pace that would suggest it will easily surpass the high water mark from a year ago.

In November, Ozarks Food Harvest received more than 700,000 pounds of food for the first time in its 25 year history.  So far this month, more than 500,000 pounds of food has been received.

And, the record pace of donations has been accompanied by a drastic increase in need.  The Food Bank shipped out more than 550,000 pounds last month and has already distributed about 450,000 pounds in November.  This is compared to a monthly average of about 400,000 pounds last year.
