SWMOA-Marshfield participating in Food Bank’s Senior Food Box Program

October 2, 2012

Office on Aging will distribute nearly 100 boxes monthly to Webster County seniors

MARSHFIELD, Mo.— The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging (SWMOA) in Marshfield announces it will partner with the regional food bank, Ozarks Food Harvest, to help serve low-income Webster County seniors healthy food.

By partnering with senior centers and low-income senior housing facilities, Ozarks Food Harvest is able to provide 2,000 boxes to income-eligible seniors — age 60 or older — each and every month. The Office on Aging in Marshfield will see 76 of these boxes monthly to help serve those seniors in need in Webster County.

Chris Parker at SWMOA-Marshfield says the senior food boxes will be distributed on the third Friday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. at the office located at 228 N. Crittenden. Seniors interested in participating in the program can sign up at the SWMOA weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ozarks Food Harvest’s Senior Food Box Program supplements the diets of low-income seniors with nutritious USDA commodity foods at 17 locations across 15 southwest Missouri counties.

The senior boxes provide a good source of nutrients typically lacking in the diets of low-income seniors, including items such as canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter, beans, canned meat, cereal, milk, cheese, rice and pasta.

Annually, 24,000 boxes are assembled solely by Ozarks Food Harvest volunteers and distributed by The Food Bank.
