Protein to be donated to McDonald’s Cans for Coffee for fourth consecutive year

WHAT:  Tyson Foods, Inc. will donate nearly 40,000 pounds of protein to Ozarks Food Harvest in the name of the fourth annual McDonald’s Cans for Coffee food drive for 28 southwest Missouri counties.

WHERE:  Ozarks Food Harvest–The Food Bank, 2810 N. Cedarbrook Ave., Springfield, Mo. 65803

WHEN:  10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Ozarks Food Harvest is receiving a donation of more than 38,000 pounds of chicken from Tyson Foods, Inc. in support of the fourth annual McDonald’s Cans for Coffee food drive.

The food drive encourages community members to donate a nonperishable food item at a participating McDonald’s of the Ozarks location, and in exchange, donors receive one free small McCafé® drink of their choice through Nov. 20.

“In this weak economy, demand for food assistance continues to spike,” said Bart Brown, president and CEO at Ozarks Food Harvest. “Many families who originally accessed our pantries as a temporary fix to help their household budgets have been forced to visit pantries on a more long-term basis as a source of food for their children right now.”

In the 28 Missouri counties Ozarks Food Harvest serves, nearly 180,000 people are food insecure—meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from—and one in four of these hungry individuals are children, making food drives such as Cans for Coffee all the more important to Ozarkers in need. Ozarks Food Harvest is the only food bank in southwest Missouri, and distributes one million pounds of food monthly to 300 nonprofit agencies.

“We are thankful for partners like Tyson who donate protein, one of our most needed food items. With the help of Tyson, we can help our clients can put more protein-rich foods on the table,” Brown said.
